Artist Statement
I create pastel paintings of imagined, intrapsychic landscapes that evoke memories of unseen, poignant moments of inner human experience. These works draw the observer’s attention to the timeless depth of their being and bring one “present” to Source.
As artifacts, they become caring, healing, inspiring, and sustaining companions in one’s unfolding experience of the phenomenology of life.
I am influenced by my extensive education in psychology, philosophy, postmodern semiotics, Jungian and Gestalt therapy, Gestalt organization and systems development methodology, field theory, systems theory, communication theory, anthropology, shamanism, and world religions, as well as various approaches to sustained meditation practice.
After a successful 46-year career in education focused on the heart—teaching, coaching, counseling, mentoring, designing, and facilitating experiential personal growth and community-building programs at high schools, community colleges, and universities in Indiana and Tennessee- including work with the US Peace Corps in North Macedonia—I stopped teaching.
I moved to Nashville in July 2024 to start an art business. I will create art full-time and sell fine art prints and originals of my work.
At this Periscope Artist’s Showcase, I aim to attract fans and collectors and network with local picture framers, gallery owners, and on-demand printmakers.
Thank you, Nashville Arts and Business Council; your Periscope Program is transformative!
Last leaf of the Maple fell.
Only leaf of Oak, which seemed its natural way,
Clung stubbornly to inanimate twig,
When first flakes appeared in late morning,
And, winter came on like an old heavy coat,
Slowing his steps to a saint’s pace.
On an outpost in extremity, the Ancient Stranger waited,
Listening intently, sniffing unperceptively,
Not even noticing him.
This was the Stranger’s world;
All he could do was witness.
